may 321 update Three Highlights • Two Quotes • One Challenge As the 2024-2025 school year comes to a close, there is much to reflect on and even more to be proud of across the West Carroll Special School District. This month’s update highlights the academic achievements, student leadership, and community efforts that are strengthening our schools. As always, the continued support of families, staff, and community members makes these accomplishments possible. 3 Highlights from Across the District Student Government Earns State Recognition: This year marked the first year for West Carroll’s Student Government at the junior/senior high school. Despite being a newly formed organization, students won first place in TN statewide SGA apparel contest. . In addition to state recognition, the Senior SGA officers lead Karma Wilkey developed a new school closet providing clothing, jackets, shoes, and hygiene products to students who may not have access to these items. The closet will also help students needing a clothing change to avoid losing academic time for dress code issues. FFA Program Achieves Regional Wins and Community Success: West Carroll FFA students Carson Cooper and Hannah Fowler were named West Tennessee champions in forage production and beef production, respectively. Their winning agriculture experience proficiency applications required multiple years of documented work and writing. This was the first time in program history that West Carroll students won in these competitive regional categories. Though they did not place at the state level, both were among the top three in Tennessee. Academic Success and Student Service Across Schools: At West Carroll Elementary School, more than 50 students earned recognition by reading 100 books or accumulating 100 Accelerated Reader points. Dr. Jessica Williams, West Carroll Elementary Principal, credited students’ growing interest in reading and the support of librarian Pat Hudgins and teaching staff. During Tennessee Waste Prevention Week, students collected nearly 1,000 non-perishable food items. Principal Jackie Wester noted the generosity of students and families, as well as the strong school spirit shown during the collection drive. 2 Quotes from Our Principals "Over 50 students qualified for our library celebration for reading 100 books or earning 100 AR points — including one student who read 200 books and another who earned over 300 points." — Dr. Jessica Williams, Elementary School Principal "Our students and families came together for Tennessee Waste Prevention Week, collecting nearly 1,000 non-perishable food items. It was inspiring to see such generosity and community spirit." — Jackie Wester, Primary School Principal 1 Challenge for Our Community As the school year ends and we look ahead to the summer and fall, we invite families, local businesses, churches, and community organizations to support the Student Government’s school closet project. Donations of jackets, shoes, hygiene products, and other essential items will help stock this important project lead by our student government. Donations can be dropped off at West Carroll High School during school hours. May is always one of the busiest months of the school year. This year’s activities include field days, end-of-year awards, graduation preparation, & statewide testing. Our students have performed well academically, represented West Carroll with pride in regional and state contests, and demonstrated leadership in school service projects. Our next board meeting will be held at WCHS on June 5th. I hope to see you there.
