Small School. Big Mission

At WCSSD, our mission is to prepare students for life beyond the classroom.

We accomplish this through small class sizes, diverse academic and career pathways, and a safe, supportive learning environment where every child is known, valued, and inspired to reach full potential.

Discover West Carroll Special School District

Tucked in the heart of rural Carroll County, West Carroll Special School District (WCSSD) is one of the community’s best-kept secrets—serving the towns of Trezevant, Atwood, McLemoresville, Cedar Grove, and Lavinia. Formed in 1981 through the consolidation of the Atwood and Trezevant Special School Districts and three local elementary schools, WCSSD now supports approximately 800 students across three schools.

With small class sizes, a 11:1 student-to-teacher ratio, 81 certified educators and 45 support staff (Over 50% holding advanced degrees), students receive the personalized attention they need to thrive. Faculty are evaluated through a state-approved system and reflect a commitment to equity in both race and gender.

WCSSD is a unitary system that voluntarily complies with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Our inclusive approach ensures that no busing for integration is needed.

Governance is provided by a six-member elected Board of Education, with two members each representing the former Atwood, Trezevant, and County districts. Elections are staggered every two years.

Transportation is offered through the Carroll County Board of Education and includes service to the Carroll County Vocational Center, giving high school students access to specialized career training.
